To become a regional research hub was always a central goal for Qatar Foundation. The knowledge-based society that is being created is one that not only consumes knowledge, but also produces it.
Throughout the world, universities are among the main creators of knowledge, and the universities that were selected and invited to join Education City were assessed to a large extent on the basis of their research records.
During the initial growth phase the universities have established their highly-regarded teaching programs. Now their research activities are coming to the fore.
It is generally acknowledged in higher education that top-quality learning and teaching, and top-quality research are mutually supportive. Those people who are at the cutting edge in their disciplines inject an inspirational passion into their teaching. They, in turn, can find a healthy challenge in being obliged to explain their basic assumptions and impart their thinking processes to bright young minds.
Research and teaching are integrated to a large degree in the Education City universities. Students are introduced to research methodologies by their teachers and work closely with them on individual and group projects.
Student researchers have benefited from The Qatar National Research Fund's
Undergraduate Research Experience Program, and more recently a number of major awards have been granted at faculty level through the National Priorities Research Program.
Particular emphasis is placed on research that will be of clear benefit to the State of Qatar. In many cases, it is being carried out in concert with local organizations - something that will encourage the development of an indigenous research culture.
