The Board of Directors is made up of internationally recognised leaders and innovators from academia, business and government. The Board meets several times per year to review Qatar Foundation's progress towards fulfilling its mission and to approve strategic initiatives. Members are expected to apply their knowledge and experience to the benefit of Board discussions, and to champion Qatar Foundation's interests in their outside activities.
DR. SAIF ALI AL-HAJARI, VICE-CHAIRPERSON
Dr Saif Ali Al-Hajari occupies a number of prominent positions in the public life of Qatar. He is the founder and Chairman of Friends of the Environment Center, Vice-Chair of Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs, and general supervisor at Al-Noor Institute for the Blind. He has launched and continues to play a leading role in many initiatives, including Qatar Academy, the Qatar Leadership Academy, the Qatar Music Academy, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Green Projects.
DR. MOHAMMAD FATHY SAOUD,PRESIDENT OF QATAR FOUNDATION
Dr Mohammad Fathy Saoud is President of Qatar Foundation, and is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Foundation's Sidra Medical and Research Center. He joined the Foundation in 1997 as Higher Education Advisor to the Board of Directors and was appointed as a member of the Board in 2003. He was Founding Dean of the Science Faculty at Qatar University - a position he held for almost 10 years. He has been instrumental in the planning and development of Education City, Qatar Foundation's flagship project. He played an important role in the early planning and implementation of several projects in Education City, including the university campuses, Sidra Medical and Research Center, QSTP and Qatar National Research Fund.
HIS EXCELLENCY DR. ABDULLAH HUSSAIN AL-KUBAISI
His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al-Kubaisi is Executive Director of the Office of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned since 2004. He joined Qatar Foundation in 2003 as its principal advisor on science and technology and was Chairman of the Qatar Science and Technology Park until 2007. He was previously Dean of the College of Science of Qatar University.
Dr. Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad became President of Qatar University in 2003 after occupying a number of senior teaching, administration and research positions. She is a member of the United Nations University Council and an active member of Qatar's Supreme Education Council. She was also the Founding Chair of the Academic Committee at Qatar Foundation, which has been entrusted since its inception with leading new higher education initiatives at Education City.
HIS EXCELLENCY SHEIKH DR. HAMAD BIN NASSER AL-THANI
His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Hamad Bin Nasser Al-Thani is General Manager of the Qatar Development Bank and Chairman of the Qatari-German Company for Medical Devices, chairman of the Future Pipe Industries and Vice Chairman of the Dlala Holding Company, He previously worked as Deputy Treasurer of Qatar Liquefied Gas Company Ltd. and as Controller of Policies, Rules and Regulations in Qatar Petroleum.
Dr Jordan J. Cohen is one of the USA's chief advocates of academic medicine. He has served as President and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges, chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine and of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Education, and he has chaired and been member of numerous other boards. He has also held the deanship at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is a member of the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee of Qatar Foundation's Sidra Medical and Research Center.
Dr. Vartan Gregorian has been President of Carnegie Corporation of New York since 1997. He previously served as President of Brown University for nine years, and for eight years as President of the New York Public Library. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 1998 and the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civil award, in 2004.
HIS EXCELLENCY DR. HAJAR AHMED HAJAR AL BINALI
His Excellency Dr. Hajar Ahmed Hajar Al Binali has been Advisor for Health Affairs to His Highness the Emir of Qatar since 2005. He is Chairman of the Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Department at Hamad Medical Corporation, President of the Gulf Heart Association, and an International Advisor of the American College of Cardiology. He has previously served as Qatar's Minister of Public Health, and as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of Hamad Medical Corporation.
HIS EXCELLENCY YOUSEF HUSSAIN KAMAL
H. E. Yousef Hussain Kamal has been serving as Qatar's Minister of Finance since 1998 and Minister of Economy and Finance since 2008. He is also serving as chairman, vice Chairman and Board member in many major Qatari companies. He is also representing the State of Qatar to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, Arab Monetary Fund, The Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund.
Sir Charles Masefield is the Chairman of Helvetica, a Swiss Financial Management Institution. During a long career in European industry Sir Charles has been: President of BAE Systems, Chairman of the medical research company, Microsulis and Commercial Director of Airbus Industry. Sir Charles is also a former Chairman of TABD (Transatlantic Business Development) in which capacity he interfaced with the European Union and the US Administration on behalf of some 800 major companies within the European industry.
HIS EXCELLENCY SHEIKH DR. AHMED ZAKI YAMANI
His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Zaki Yamini, former Saudi Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and past OPEC President, is founder of the Center for Global Energy Studies, based in London, and also of Al Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation. In 1963 he established Saudi Arabia's national oil company as well as the University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran, with the help of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University and the American University of Beirut."
Dr. Ahmed Zewail is presently the Linus Pauling Chair Professor of Chemistry and Physics and the Director of the Physical Biology Center for Ultrafast Science & Technology at the California Institute of Technology. He was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work in the development of the field of femtoscience. Dr. Zewail holds some 30 honorary degrees in the sciences, arts, philosophy, law, medicine and humanities from around the globe. He is an elected member of numerous international academies and societies, and serves on the boards of directors and trustees of universities, research institutions and major corporations.
